Songs of Sadhu Om — II
Total surrender through Grace
We saw in Part I of Sadhu Om’s songs the gist of self-inquiry that points to the fallacy of a separate I or doer and therefore the need for surrender to the One Supreme who alone ordains and acts through all forms down to every atom of the Universe. Such surrender is truly the end of or freedom from knowledge which is the literal meaning of the word ‘Vedanta’ (Veda — knowledge, anta — end)
However, having this clarity alone does not effect the surrender of the apparent ego that persistently rises as I due to deep conditioning through both nature and nurture in every human being. Every sincere seeker of Truth realizes the utter inadequacy of any amount of understanding and the desperate need for Grace to make true and total surrender to God possible. This same realization is echoed in the Biblical proverb “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.”
Thus Sadhu Om also has poured his heart out through many songs pining for Grace that takes one past mere intellectual understanding (which can be a great trap the ego lays out) to an experiential realization of the Truth. Such realization alone can radiate every moment as the divine bliss and peace within.
In this piece, we will look at a few songs of Sadhu Om that are in such a profound mood (bhāva) of devotion, again with the soulful renditions of Sriram Parthasarathy to listen along, while reading the translation of the lyrics. I have also included the original tamil lyrics that Michael James graciously shared with me.
