Response to a friend who commented: "interesting read, thanks. on the flip side, it could be like, idle mind is the devil's workshop unless it reaches no mind state. even creative workers like musicians/ travel vloggers all have expressed work pressure even if its creative work. everything done or undone for happiness will only create stress & only effortless state can be fruitful.":
Yes idle mind can be devil's workshop or divine playground. Similarly busy work can also be devil's workshop or divine playground. It all depends....ultimately on whether there is separation between the doer and the deed. The point of the post is orthogonal, that we are societally moving away from hard work as a virtue which can have some good implications, such as less rat race, and some bad implications, such as more consumerism.
The state of no separation transcends all these considerations. It is laziness while engaged in work. You may know this verse of Ramana Maharshi in this regard:
Sōmbiyāy chummā sukhamundurangidil
Solvērengati, arunāchala
If I sleep as a lazy one, being still and consuming bliss, tell me if there is any other state (higher) than this, O Arunachala?
While many avoided translating 'sombi' as 'lazy' because of the negative connotations, it is indeed the correct translation. And to remove any doubt, when Muruganar was commenting on the above verse and sought clarification from Ramana Maharshi, he was given another verse from Tirumandiram that re-emphasizes supreme laziness:
The place where the lazy ones dwell is pure space, the place where the lazy ones rest is pure space
The consciousness of the lazy ones remains in the place which the Vedas have abandoned as beyond their scope
The lazy ones have gained the state in which they are sleeping totally unaware of the Vedas (Tirumandiram, v. 127)
