Vaaranam Aayiram: Most auspicious dream of the Beloved

There is a story in the life of the great devotee saint Meera that once as she went around the streets of Vrindavan blissfully singing to her Beloved Krishna, she reached the Ashram of a saint. As she neared the entrance, his disciples told her that their teacher was inside and does not meet with women. Meera listened to it and asked out of her innocence and one-pointed love, “But I thought the only man in Vrindavan is Krishna and everyone is only his consort”. The disciples went inside to relate this to the saint who realizing her greatness immediately came running to fall at her feet!

Similar to Meera and many centuries before, there lived in the Tamil province another great female devotee saint called Andaal. Her sublime poetry of divine romance is sung till date by everyone, especially during the winter season (Dec-Jan) every year.

Originally named Godai and raised by her doting father Vishnuchitta in an atmosphere of loving devotion, she grew up to be a teenager with an all-consuming love for her Beloved Krishna and refused to marry any mortal being but only Him. She imagined playing the role of His bride and adorned herself daily with the flower garland prepared for the Lord at the temple. One day, noticing a strand of Godai’s hair on the garland and shocked by this apparent desecration, her father chastised her and carefully prepared a new one for the Lord— only for Krishna to appear in his dream the same night and say that He missed the garland adorned by Godai! Vishnuchitta then realized the intensity of his daughter’s love for God and she came to be known as Andaal, she who ruled over the Lord Himself.

She composed poetry with unparalleled devotion and unforgettable imagery in expressing her divine love. In one remarkable instance, when she had been suffering intense separation and pining for her Beloved, she was blessed with the most auspicious dream of a marital union with Krishna that took her through the entire wedding ceremony step by step. These steps are followed to this day in all traditional weddings of South India.

She poured forth the unbounded joy of her blessed vision in a most exquisite poetry of ten verses. Here are the verses with an attempted English translation and also a nice musical rendition at the end to listen along.

மாப்பிள்ளை அழைப்பு:
வாரணம் ஆயிரம் சூழ வலம் செய்து
நாரண நம்பி நடக்கின்றான் என்றெதிர்
பூரண பொற்குடம் வைத்துப் புறம் எங்கும்
தோரணம் நாட்டக் கனாக்கண்டேன் தோழி நான்!

Welcoming the bridegroom:
Surrounded by a thousand elephants
Lord Narayana walks through town
Being received with golden pots of sanctified water
Streamers decorating all sides
Oh dear friend, such is the dream I saw!

நிச்சயதார்த்தம்:
நாளை வதுவை மணம் என்று நாளிட்டு
பாளை கமுகு பரிசடைப் பந்தற் கீழ்
கோளரி மாதவன் கோவிந்தன் என்பான் ஓர்
காளை புகுதக் கனாக்கண்டேன் தோழி நான்!

Betrothal:
Tomorrow being fixed as the wedding day
In the canopy decorated by betel nut trees
A majestic lion named Madhava Govinda
Enters like a bull among men
Oh dear friend, such is the dream I saw!

பெரியோர்களின் அனுமதி:
இந்திரன் உள்ளிட்ட தேவர் குழாமெல்லாம்
வந்திருந்து என்னை மகட்பேசி மந்திரித்து
மந்திரக் கோடியுடுத்தி மண மாலை
அந்தரி சூட்டக் கனாக்கண்டேன் தோழி நான்!

Blessings of the elders:
Indra and all other devas have come
To offer me as the bride and bless me
Ma Durga helps me wear new auspicious clothes
And decorates me with a sweet smelling garland
Oh dear friend, such is the dream I saw!

காப்பு கட்டுதல்:
நாற்றிசைத் தீர்த்தங் கொணர்ந்து நனி நல்கி
பார்ப்பனச் சிட்டர்கள் பல்லார் எடுத்தேத்தி
பூப்புனை கண்ணிப் புனிதனோ டென்றன்னை
காப்பு நாண் கட்டக் கனாக்கண்டேன் தோழி நான்!

Protective band:
Sacred waters from all four directions brought
Priests sanctifying them and sprinkling on me
And with the Pure One who is decorated with garlands
My wrist tied with a protective band
Oh dear friend, such is the dream I saw!

பிடி சுற்றுதல்:
கதிரொளி தீபம் கலசம் உடன் ஏந்தி
சதிரிள மங்கையர் தாம் வந்து எதிர்கொள்ள
மதுரையார் மன்னன் அடி நிலை தொட்டு எங்கும்
அதிரப் புகுதக் கனாக்கண்டேன் தோழி நான்!

Removing the evil eye:
With lamps bright as the Sun and pots of water
Pretty maids come in front to welcome
The king of Mathura Sri Krishna who enters
Making the earth shake with His majestic steps
Oh dear friend, such is the dream I saw!

பாணிக்ரஹணம்:
மத்தளம் கொட்ட வரி சங்கம் நின்றூத
முத்துடைத் தாம் நிரை தாழ்ந்த பந்தற் கீழ்
மைத்துனன் நம்பி மதுசூதன் வந்து என்னைக்
கைத்தலம் பற்றக் கனாக்கண்டேன் தோழி நான்!

Taking the hand in marriage:
With auspicious drums playing and conches blown
Under the low lying canopy decorated with pearl strands
My betrothed and most eminent Madhusudana comes
To take hold of my hands and marry me
Oh dear friend, such is the dream I saw!

ஸப்தபதி:
வாய் நல்லார் நல்ல மறையோதி மந்திரத்தால்
பாசிலை நாணல் படுத்துப் பரிதி வைத்து
காய்சின மாகளி றன்னான் என் கைப்பற்றி
தீவலம் செய்யக் கனாக்கண்டேன் தோழி நான்!

Seven steps around the holy fire:
As the well-spoken chanted the Vedas and mantras
Green grass spread around the fire fueled by dry sticks
Like a majestic elephant He held my hand
To circumambulate the holy fire together
Oh dear friend, such is the dream I saw!

அம்மி மிதித்தல்:
இம்மைக்கும் ஏழேழ் பிறவிக்கும் பற்றாவான்
நம்மை உடையவன் நாராயணன் நம்பி
செம்மை யுடைய திருக்கையால் தாள் பற்றி
அம்மி மிதிக்கக் கனாக்கண்டேன் தோழி நான்!

Sacred vows:
For this birth and all forthcoming births
Our Protector being Lord Narayana alone
He took my feet with His reddish auspicious hand
Placing it on the grinding stone
Oh dear friend, such is the dream I saw!

பொறி இடுதல்:
வரிசிலை வாள்முகத் தென்னைமார் தாம் வந்திட்டு
எரிமுகம் பாரித்து என்னை முன்னே நிறுத்தி
அரிமுகன் அச்சுதன் கைம்மேலென் கைவைத்து
பொரிமுகந் தட்டக் கனாக்கண்டேன் தோழி நான்!

Brothers giving away the bride:
Then came my brothers with radiant faces and bow-like eyebrows
To make me stand facing the sacred fire
Placing my hands upon the hands of the lion faced Achyuta
And we offered puffed rice in the holy fire
Oh dear friend, such is the dream I saw!

மஞ்சள் நீர் தெளித்தல்:
குங்குமம் அப்பிக் குளிர்ச் சாந்தம் மட்டித்து
மங்கல வீதி வலம் செய்து மணநீர்
அங்கவ னோடு முடஞ்சென்றங் கானைமேல்
மஞ்சன மாட்டக் கனாக்கண்டேன் தோழி நான்!

Sprinkling of holy water:
With sacred vermilion and cool sandalwood paste applied
Going around the auspicious streets in procession
We rode together on top of an elephant
And we were given a holy bath with sacred waters
Oh dear friend, such is the dream I saw!

பாராயண பலன்:
ஆயனுக் காகத்தான் கண்ட கனாவினை
வேயர் புகழ் வில்லி புத்தூர்க்கோன் கோதைசொல்
தூய தமிழ்மாலை ஈரைந்தும் வல்லவர்
வாயு நன் மக்களைப் பெற்று மகிழ்வரே!

Benefit of chanting:
The dream seen with the beloved cowherd Krishna
And composed in ten verses of pure Tamil
By the daughter of the well reputed king of Villiputtur
Those who chant shall be blessed with good progeny and bliss!

As an epilogue, her short earthly life consummated similar to Meera again with her merging into the blaze of the Beloved in the inner sanctum of the grand temple of Srirangam. She is the most revered female poet saint of Tamils and present as a deity in all the Vaishnava temples of South India.
